Geography |
The UAE, which Dubai is a major part of, is bordered by Saudi Arabia and Oman. The immediate access to water consists of the Persian Gulf and the Golf of Oman. The latter is perhaps one of the most interesting features of the UAE due to the fact that on the average, the temperature is very hot in the UAE, and the terrain is mostly desert-like (the landscape is changing due to construction). Its geographical characteristics are very enticing for business ventures and a live example of that phenomenon is the ever-growing expansion boom of Dubai. |
Population |
The people of the UAE who are citizens of the country are called Emirati (People of the Emirates). The current population of the United Arab Emirates is slightly higher than the 2.5 million mark, but due to the very high degree of construction and business capital, it is believed that that will increase rapidly as time goes by. One defining factor of the UAE’s population which is definitely different from the rest of the middle-eastern countries, is the repartition of ethnicities within its territory. Half of the UAE’s population comprises of South Asians, another quarter consists of Iranians and other middle-easterners, some westerners and only about 19% are truly Emirati. |
Languages |
The main language spoken in the UAE is Arabic, but English is widely spoken too. Other languages such as Persian, Hindu and Urdu are used with less frequency. |
Government / Legal |
Each of the 7 seven Emirates of the UAE (Dubai Dubayy, Abu Dhabi Abu Zaby, Ajman, Al Fujayrah, Ash Shariqah and Umm al Qaywayn, Ra's al Khaymah) have their own ruler who makes regional decisions and every 5 years, a UAE president is appointed by a vote between the rulers of the 7 Emirates. There is also the Federal Supreme Council (FSC) which is comprised of the rulers of the 7 Emireates. General policy making is through this body of the government.

The latter is responsible of an increase in tourism in Dubai, and some experts estimate that number to be around 15 million visitors a year within the next 5-7 years. |
